Why we Started Ula
Ula Tortila was founded after we searched searched far and wide (or at least around the town of Charlottesville) for a corn tortilla that met all of our family's needs, but came up empty handed. No tortilla we encountered was healthy, tasty, and all natural.
That's why we started making our tortillas fresh using certified organic, non-GMO corn, which is processed using the ancient technique of nixtamalization. Nixtamalization involves cooking and soaking our corn in a solution of lime (calcium hydroxide) and water overnight. This process increases flavor, aroma, and nutrition while eliminating toxins.
After rinsing we grind the corn in our stone grinder which produces masa, the dough with which we make our tortillas.
We take pride in the process, used for millenia in ancient Mesoamerican civilizations, and hope that you enjoy our tortillas as much as we do!

Nixtamalization
Nixtamalization is at the heart of why our tortillas are so delicious and healthy. Not only does the process make them tastier, it also releases vital nutrients from the corn. You can read all about the process by clicking the button below.
